Social Groups  - 2017

June 5, 2017 through August 15, 2017

Early Social Skills (up to age 5)
Tuesday  9:00 - 9:45
We want to encourage development of your child’s early social thinking skills. The skills will be addressed through play, structured games, and snack time. During this time we will focus on using greetings with familiar and unfamiliar people (hi, bye, eye contact), game play (turn taking skills while playing a game with a peer), asking for help appropriately, answering questions with yes/no response, and making simple requests (asking for something instead of grabbing).

Level II Social Skills
Thursday  2:45 -3:30
In this group we will encourage development of your child’s social thinking skills. The skills will be addressed through activities, games, and conversation time. We will focus on using greetings with familiar and unfamiliar people (hi, bye, eye contact), understanding personal space, the boundary circle (understanding who it is okay to hug/show affection to, wave to/say hi, and not okay to talk to), asking about others’ personal information (what’s your name? how old are you? What do you like to do?), reading body language/facial expressions and maintaining a conversation (asking appropriate questions and making comments about what others are saying)

Higher Level Social Skills (5 + )
Tuesday 1:30 - 2:15
In this group we will to encourage development of your child’s higher level of social thinking skills. The skills will be addressed through activities, games, and conversation time. We will focus on understanding personal space, reading body language/facial expressions, taking the perspective of others (identify how another person is feeling, what they are thinking, and what they might want to do based on that), the boundary circle (understanding who it is okay to hug/show affection to, wave to/say hi, and not okay to talk to), and socially what is expected vs. unexpected comments (inappropriate vs. appropriate).
